FW sa do procesora prehráva tzv. ISP (In System Prog.) pripojením, t.j. pripojením programátora k niekoľkým presne definovaným vývodom procesora. ISP programátorov je viacero druhov, od riadeného cez paralelný port PC až po USB programátory, ktorých je však tiež niekoľko druhov. Každý má svoje špecifiká a je potrebné riadiť sa pokynmi presne k použitému. Niektoré totiž potrebujú externé napájanie (napr. priamo z vysielača), iné naopak sami cez USB napájajú celú dosku. Okrem samotného riadiaceho programu každý programátor umožňuje prehrať aj obsah EEPROM a taktiež konfiguračných bitov procesora, určujúcich samotnú konfiguráciu procesora (napr. prácu s internými hodinami, alebo časovanie kryštálom…). Preto je dôležité pri nahrávaní FW držať sa pokynov z návodu k programátora a aj v dokumentácii k FW. Môže sa totižto stať aj prípad, že sa konfiguračné bity premažú a z procesora sa stane mŕtvy šváb… (v určitých prípadoch sa mu dá pomôcť…). Preto z pohľadu profesionála je to triviálny zásah, a aj to tak vyzerá, ale je k tomu potrebná dávka znalostí. Problémové je ešte rozhodnutie, či vývody na programovanie urobiť trvalé (v tom prípade s patričnou dávkou opatrnosti ich umiestnenia tak, aby nebolo možné za bežnej prevádzky vysielača ich k niečomu pripojiť, zoskratovať a podobne), alebo či len jednorazovo ich prispájkovať alebo inak pripevniť a po prehratí FW znova odstrániť…
